Here are the top 13 reasons for hair loss:

  1. Chemotherapy consists of powerful medication that attack rapidly growing cancer cells, which also attacks other rapidly growing cells in the body including hair roots
  2. Too much vitamin A Most dietary provitamin A comes from orange and yellow vegetables, leafy green vegetables, tomato products, fruits, and some vegetable oils. The nutrient helps strengthen hair from breaking and helps produce a healthy sebum to nourish and protect the hair. Too much of the nutrient can cause hair to fall out but is 100% reversible as soon as the vitamin exits the body, hair growth should return to normal.
  3. Hypothyroidism it is unusual for mild, subclinical hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, or short-lived thyroid problems to cause hair loss. When hypothyroidism is the cause of hair loss, is is diffuse, and affects the entire scalp.
  4. Anemiairon deficiency anemia causes hair loss because it sends your body into survival mode, channeling oxygen to support vital functions, and away from functions like supporting hair growth
  5. Male pattern baldness a primary reason for male pattern baldness is genetics. Research also proves that male sex hormones, androgens, are also responsible
  6. Female hormones hormones are the most common reason to explain hair loss in men and in women. The hormone, dihydrotestosterone (known as “DHT”), is produced by the body as a byproduct of testosterone. DHT minimizes the hair follicle, which minimizes hair growth, causing the hair to eventually fall out
  7. Dramatic weight loss – following a significant change in weight, the body mass index experiences physical stress which signals the hair follicles to move into an inactive stage. This is associated with a condition called a Telogen Effluvium.
  8. Medication including blood thinners / antidepressantsthe type of hair loss associated with these medications is telogen effluvium, which impacts the entire scalp. The medication is, in some ways. toxic to the hair follicles, causing them to fall out
  9. Stressthere are 3 types of hair loss that can be associated with stress: ONE Telogen effluvium (entire scalp impacted), TWO Alopecia areata – where the immune system attacks the hair follicle, and THREE Trichotillomania – which is the irresistible urge to pull your hair out. Loss of hair from stress is typically not permanent and lasts only as long as the stress.
  10. Pregnancysome women experience hair loss as a result of shock, some women experience hair thinning as a result of lack of resources and the fluctuation in hormones
  11. Over styling the easiest fix to this type of hair is to utilize protective styling and increase the hair care regimen. Hair loss from over styling is typically the result of hair that has been weakened from too much styling and as a result, falls out
  12. Polycystic ovary syndrome – PCOS is already associated with the genetic predisposition to follicle sensitivity. “If hair follicles are androgen-sensitive, this can decrease the growth of hair on the scalp and increase the growth of body and facial hair (called hirsutism), especially when androgen levels are excessive” shares Headcovers.
  13. Lack of Proteinif there are no major health conditions or sign of genetic conditions, hair loss may be the result of a vitamin deficiency and poor diet. Aside from eating healthily, hair requires copmplex carbohydrates, iron, and protein to function. Great foods that can remedy this deficiency include: milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs etc. are loaded with essential nutrients such as proteins, Vitamin B12, iron, zinc and Omega 6 fatty acids.
