Whether you’re Black of White, Brown or a mixture of multiple, you may be surprised to learn that you have another skin color.
What do you mean?
Every human being has a few layers of skin:
The innermost layer is called the hypodermis and is comprised of fat and connective tissue.
A middle layer of skin contains the hair follicles, sweat glands and more tissue. The outermost layer, called the epidermis, provides a waterproof barrier and creates the skin color/tone.
Everyone has a skin color/tone and an undertone.
Unlike skin color/tone, your undertone has absolutely no relation to the color of your racial profile or your ethnicity.
What is my undertone?
Your skin undertone can be a variety of colors. Stacy Phillips Fashion Stylist shares a grid on undertones:
When selecting makeup, it is helpful to understand your skins undertone, especially foundation. Foundation is made to match your skin complexion and having an understanding of your skins undertone can help you decide if you need shade 100, shade 101A, or shade 101AB (which are clearly all very close in shade, but may have a different tine or tone that mixes better with your complexion.)
When we hear makeup brands like Rihanna’s line “Fenty” that offers 40 shades of makeup, they have 40 colors that appeal to different skin complexions, yes, but also similar colors that appeal to various skin undertones. Check out the following foundations that are basically the same color, but have a different tint, which appeal to various undertones:
Knowing your skin undertone is helpful for makeup but can also be helpful when picking out colors of clothing and even jewlery.
Urban Clap shares how to find your skin undertone:
“Look at the underside of your wrists and closely examine the color of your veins.
- Cool: If your veins look purple or blue, then you have a cool undertone.
- Warm: If your veins appear greenish or olive veins, you have a warm undertone.
- Neutral: If you cannot determine which color is dominant in your veins then you have a neutral undertone.”
